Multics Operating system Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Multics Operating system - Essay Example Significantly, more than just the design and aesthetic feature of a certain operating system is the critical role that security in operating systems is playing in ensuring that important data are stored securely. It also serves as an interceptor to potential threats in the Internet. Thus, this treatise will elaborate on the security features of Multics and its relative contributions to the world. Further, in this exposition, we will also explore the history, impacts and the influences of Multics to our modern times and how these interactions resulted in a progressive stint that the world has taken. Multiplexed Information and Computing Service, or most commonly known as Multics, is a "comprehensive, general-purpose programming system which is being developed as a research project" (Corbato & Vyssotsky, 1965). The first Multics system was applied on the GE-645 computer. According to Corbato and Vyssotsky (1965), the prime goal of designing the system was to provide a computing system which has the capability to meet the entire current and future requirements of a large computer utility. In other words, this system must be able to function continuously and reliably even with large amount of data. It was Professor Fernando Corbato from Massachusetts Institute of Technology who spearheaded the development of the system together with his colleagues in 1964. Initially, it was a joint project by MIT led by Professor Corbato, the General Electric and the Bell Laboratories; however, Bell Labs decided to back out leaving GE and Multics behind until it was later conquered by Honeywell. Following Honeywellââ¬â¢s acquisition of GEââ¬â¢s computer business, the prime Multics production machine was Honeywell 6180 mainframe which was widely recognized following 1969. Multics network implementation likewise became one of the pioneering sites after its forerunner, the ARPANET. Two MIT production machines were linked to ARPANET, the MIT 645 and the MIT 6180, which were assoc iated to ARPANET in 1971 and 1973 respectively. The development of Multics gave rise to the development of some other operating systems such as the UNIX. The operating system UNIX was created after Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie employed ideas used to develop Multics. UNIX was finally completed in 1969. But since UNIX was developed using the C language, it became widely popular with colleges and universities worldwide because of its simplicity. In November 1992, the source code of the concluding Multics version, the MR 12.5, was released to the public through MIT. This particular version comprised "5839 files of PL/I code in 337 archives" (Gedda, 2009). The authorization is relatively lenient and gives anybody the "right to use, copy, modify and distribute the code and its documentation for any purpose and without fee" (Gedda, 2009). However, while anyone can be given access and right over the archives, a copyright notice and historical background must be provided to appear in all copies according to Gedda (2009). Multics had manifold elements aimed to bring about great accessibility in order to provide massive support for computing utility comparable to that of telephone and electric services. By adjoining more of the applicable resource such as memory and computing power, the entire system could substantially expand in size. Multics has numerous unique features which distinguish it from the rest. These features were

Question for analysis 2 Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 1
Question for analysis 2 - Assignment Example Many people have become victims of distracted and cursory thinking that the internet poses. The fragmented information on the Internet tends to disrupt the readersââ¬â¢ concentration. In essence, the online environment promotes the superficial and hurried search for information, which the readers spend less time to internalize and think comprehensively. The alternatives to becoming critical information consumers and questioners are printing and people questioning whatever content they read on the internet. The advantage of publishing a tangible publication is that the readers will have time to internalize and engage with the content as they embrace intensive reading (Robin and Power 35). Readers can concentrate on the content without distraction as pointed out by the author. However, the challenge of printing is the increased automation of books and the environmental fears about depleting the natural resources. Alternatively, the readers can take charge of whatever they read on the internet. In this respect, behavioral change is critical in transforming people from mere decoders of information to critical questioners of the content. The change in the reading habits is a viable solution because everybody can decide to embrace the comprehensive interaction and critical acquisition of

Innovation and Technology Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Innovation and Technology Management - Essay Example They not only improved the amount of storage capacity, but also brought about many more features along with themselves. Using the multiple dimension of value framework, what factor or factors do you think influenced whether a) consumers, b) retailers, and c) movie producers supported Blu-Ray versus HD-DVD?à The conquest of market has extended over number of years between the two lead players of this innovative technology in the name of blue laser capacity over the disc. While their predecessors used red laser wavelength the successor duo makes use of blue laser wavelength for which they are fast at reading and processing and hence more advanced and better. Both provide state of the art features yet there are certain factors which enable one surpassing the other in context of consumer attention, retailer orientation towards the respective technology and the market leads for each of them that advocate and promote its usage. The consumersââ¬â¢ perspective: Consumers would always r ush towards a product or service that provides variety and improvement over the previous mode and model. The comparison can be drawn between the previous technology and current technology through the features that each possess. The Blu-ray and HD-DVD are seen as a generation step up process from the conventional DVD setup that we had around us. Apart from the storage capacity which has increased multi folds, they have improved the manner in which the entire viewing media operated. The quality of picture provided by the two is way better than the predecessors. While DVD can provide maximum of 480 pixel resolution, HD-DVD and Blu-ray are 1080 pixel enabled (Alez, 2012). Apart from the resolution edge, the compression patterns being employed by each of them are way better and improved in structure than the earlier form of digital storage patterns that were available. The concept is based on the usage of blue laser technology in the disc which reads faster, processes faster and hence pe rforms the tasks in a timely manner. The Nano meter capacity of each of them varies between 400 nm and 600 nm. The capacity provided by DVD is less than 5 gigabyte while Blu-ray and HD-DVD both provide storage option in double digits (Block, 2005). The dual layer support is another plus enjoyed by each of them which was absent in the DVD format. Audio formats and quality provided by each of them is another edge and outsmart of the earlier storage formats. Dolby True HD and DTS-HD are the formats supported by each of them and hence a visible improvement compared to the earlier DVD and Compact Disc formats. Besides this, the DVD players are not supported with the Blu-ray technology enabled discs while the latter provides backward compatibility (MediaCollege, 2008). Other features: while the above mentioned features were the technical and salient features, other side features include the pop up option which runs in parallel while the disc is on play and various other features. Transfer rates supported by Blu-ray disc are multiple times that of D.V.D and also faster than those of HD-DVD. They are supported for the rewriting function, recording over the disk and many other options and functions that are necessary to be part of any

Contemporary And International Marketing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words
Contemporary And International Marketing - Essay Example of globalization has forced countries and the businesses to broaden their strategies and implement these strategies in other markets to expand the size of their business and economies. Moreover, televisions, cameras, telecommunication services and products and electronic gadgets are in great demand by consumers and businesses, who are involved in producing these products and services, see this increasing demand as a great opportunity to produce even greater revenues. The expansion of business can be in the form of foreign direct investments, Greenfield ventures, licensing and franchising or by opening up a subsidiary in cross border regions. Businesses can be involved in international markets for the sake of achieving benefits and significance of production based on the increased supply and demand in foreign markets (Lukac). In Sonyââ¬â¢s case, the Japanese conglomerate decided to expand into international markets for the sake of delivering benefits of its products and services to the customers all around the base and in return, maximizing its annual revenues and shareholdersââ¬â¢ wealth (Sony Corporation). Sony has divided its business into five geographic regions. These are Japan region, United States region, European region, Asia-Pacific region and Other Areas which include different markets in Africa, North and South America and Oceania. Sony makes its major profits in United States, Japan and European regions, thanks to the bulk selling of its communication gadgets and television in these regions. Sonyââ¬â¢s annual revenues in 2011 were amounted to around 7,181,273 Japanese Yen which are -0.0045% lower than the revenues reported in 2010 (Sony Corporation). Sony considers four emerging markets as its future prospects for setting up factories and operational facilities... This report stresses that Sony offers a variety of standardized products through the geographic regions in which it is doing business. These products can be classified as electronic devices, games and entertainment solutions. These categories includes a range of televisions and projectors, home theatres, cameras, laptops, games, portable entertainment solutions, cellular phones, batteries and chargers, peripheral devices and etc. Reason for producing and delivering standardized products to the target customers at dispersed locations is the high cost of producing and delivering differentiated products. Moreover, consumersââ¬â¢ preferences for electronic goods and gadgets are same all around the world which allows Sony to sell its trademark and standard products throughout. This paper makes a conclusion that the review of Sony Corporationââ¬â¢s business reveals that the company has established itself as the manufacturer of quality electronic goods and gadgets. The consistency in quality delivered to the customers and after sales service makes Sony the worldââ¬â¢s largest manufacturer of electronic goods and a reliable name in the field, which helps the company to maintain the current market share and attract new customers. Moreover, the massive size of its business, which is dispersed in 5 regions of the world, helps Sony to outclass its competitors, which is supplemented by the strategies adopted by the company regarding its marketing mix.

Case 10.1. Electrolux company Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Case 10.1. Electrolux company - Essay Example What the company did to make this tremendous turn-around is instead of letting each of the departments, like marketing and design, work independently from one another on the same project, they came together and worked as a team. This allowed for stronger visions for a product and newer insight on what different demographics would be looking for in a product. Essentially, the company had stereotyped a person, like ââ¬Å"Catherin,â⬠and became that person to get a feel for what they would want out of a product. Then long and behold, you have the Breeze. This concept proved to be successful for the company. They have other competitors out there that are striving to make the best appliances, and these are companies that have been around a lot longer, like Whirlpool, yet they still have an appeal that the consumers are drawn too. What allowed them to have this advantage is that they pulled the design people to help make the product look appealing in with the engineers of the product who are producing a product that is easy to use yet very effective and different from what is already available, and they had the marketing team there who could help find the best way to get the product sold.

Critical evaluation of Maths remaining as part of the curriculum Essay
Critical evaluation of Maths remaining as part of the curriculum - Essay Example Teaching and learning mathematics dates back to the third century BC making mathematics an ancient subject (Martin, 2006). Pioneers of modern mathematics include Euclid, and Pythagoras. Presumably, the age of mathematics as a subject has rendered it irrelevant in the modern world evoking the debate on whether mathematics should remain part of the school curriculum. However most teachers particularly mathematics teachers believe that mathematics should remain as part of the school curriculum. This report present a critical analysis of responses received from both teachers and students with the aim of drawing a conclusion on the issue. Majority of the teachers confirmed that mathematics is the only subject that train students how to make logical decisions on an issue. Unlike other subject, mathematical knowledge is based on fundamental theorems and principle. In addition, mathematics is the only well defined subject or the only subject that avoids contradictions. This indicates that ma thematics endows learners with fundamental skills that cannot be obtained from another subject taught in the school curriculum. According to Martin (2006), mathematics is the only universal subject and the only subject that has remained relevant over the years. ... It has been established that most subjects teach students how to memorize or remember (Martin, 2006). This aspect makes mathematics a sufficient prerequisite to nearly all subjects taught in the school curriculum. Most science and engineering subjects such as chemistry, engineering, physics, and architecture use mathematics to proof and illustrate theoretical concepts. Discovery of abstract branches of mathematics such as algebra, topology, and analysis has also been instrumental in the evolution of computer science and information technology. Thus, nearly all subjects taught in the modern school curriculum depend on mathematics as their main language of illustration. From responses received, it is evident that teachers support the issue of maintaining mathematics in the school curriculum. It is also evident that mathematics is applicable in humanities and social sciences. In particular, mathematical techniques are applied in humanities and social sciences to establish social trends and to quantify key social quantities such as population. Therefore, mathematics cannot be eliminated from the school curriculum. The interactive nature of mathematics is the main factor that makes most students to shy away from the subject. Unlike other subjects taught in the school curriculum, mathematics requires active participation of students. This compels the students to participate in classroom activities such as class discussion and completing assignments. Thus, mathematics exams not only examine a studentââ¬â¢s ability to remember theoretical content but their level of participation in the school activities. Evidently, the level of a studentââ¬â¢s participation in mathematics also measures their
